Almost Twinkie Cake
Almost Twinkie Cake In 1933, Twinkies are introduced by Continental Baking Company. The sponge cakes were originally sold without cream fillings. Their original intent was for use in making in strawberry shortcakes. The cream filling was later added, when bakery manager James A. Dewar came up with the idea to keep sales going after strawberry season was over. The original Twinkie filling was banana flavored. But during World War II, the banana shortage forced the switch to a cream filling.

You might find it interesting that the Continental Baking Company started Wonder Bread and sponsored the Howdy Doodie show.
